I dragged myself through the door of my home, shuffling my feet. The rest of the day had gone downhill and fast. It had been a long ass day. I made a promise to myself on the way home to get my shit together and do better tomorrow. I would make sure it happened.

It would have made my day to hear and see my little man toddling around the room and coming for me, but Mia would have him down already. That was another thing that had me cranky. I was supposed to have been home in time for dinner. My schedule had said I was wrapping by midafternoon. When everything went to shit, Jimmy kept us all late to make sure we got it right. I couldn’t blame the guy, but I was pissed I had missed the meal with Ryder and our favorite girl.

The house was eerily quiet, and it made me wonder if Mia was in bed too. Ryder could be a handful, so it wouldn’t surprise me if she needed the rest. I missed seeing my son, but I missed Mia for totally different reasons — just one more reason the day had gone down the shitter.

With my head hanging in defeat, I shuffled toward the kitchen. If I were walking down the street, you wouldn’t think the sad sack was an A-lister at all. Nope, I was sporting the “someone punched my puppy” look.

The cool air from the fridge spilled out when I opened the door, and only when I turned to put the sandwich Mia had left me on the counter did I notice her sitting at the table.

“Hey,” I said, instantly in a much better mood. “Why are you here in the dark?”

Even my pea-sized boy brain knew shit had gone down when I flipped on the light. Mia’s face was splotchy and red. I was prepared to wait it out and let her speak first, but with the pinched look on her face, I didn’t think that was happening. If I was a betting man, I would guess I’d have to go after it, and it was locked up tighter than the gold at Fort Knox.

“Bad day?” I hedged.

“You have no idea.”

Yeah this wasn’t going well.

“Wanna talk about it?”

“You bet your ass I do.”

I got the impression I didn’t want to know what had happened. Maybe it was her cycle or something like that. My mom always got extra crazy when that time of the month hit, and it was like a war was going on in the Woodward house. It wasn’t over until the neighbors sprayed them down with the hose or the cops were called.

I took a seat across from Mia, bracing for impact. Whatever was about to happen, I figured I needed to be sitting. If she was about to roundhouse kick me because her hormones were out of whack, at least I would be closer to the floor from here.

I was opening my mouth to ask what was going on when she placed a magazine in front of my face.
